This project started a few years ago as a way to externalize and understand the amount of loss that I've experienced. While it's rooted in this idea, 23 Funerals reaches outward to our collective memories through the senses. How we remember our experiences, even if experienced by multiple people at the same time, may be similar or universal for some and completely opposite for others. Words and phrases relating to smell, sight, taste, touch, or feeling, are juxtaposed with photos that have absolutely nothing to do with the text itself. By doing this I hope to visually connect the viewer to the idea of memory the way a book might make one salivate when reading a description of a meal. I hope to remind the viewer of how we share how we remember our experiences, whether humorous or painful.
